Telemetry, Automation, Remote Control,& SCADA Demonstrations

(SCADA)

Irrigation districts face many challenges in their daily operations which may include increasing demands for flexible and efficient operation. Automation, remote monitoring (telemetry) and control show promise in addressing such issues and can result in more efficient water management, provide real-time flow control and measurement, reduce operational and maintenance costs, and provide alarming capabilities. As a part of the Rio Grande Basin Initiative, the IDEA Team is working with irrigation districts to demonstration different aspects of telemetry, remote control, and automation. Various approaches and levels of technology such as these online displays accessible by the districts to retrieve past 24 hour and even hourly updates on flow conditions.

CAMERON COUNTY IRRIGATION DISTRICT NO. 6 - LOS FRESNOS o Live View

A low cost recording and telemetry system was installed to record water levels and calculate the flow rate of CCID6's main weir. Daily average flows are displayed in both CFS and Acre-Feet/day for the past 24 hours and 10 days. The district can also access and download the complete data file for the the past year.

UNITED IRRIGATION DISTRICT     Live View

For this demonstration, an old sluice gate structure was replaced with a radial gate. Two water level sensors were installed upstream and downstream of the gate. The gate was calibrated to establish flow control parameters for the system to be controlled automatically. The telemetry system uses a direct-connect cable to communicate between the gate site and the district office computer. District personnel now can view real-time upstream and downstream water level conditions, and remotely make changes to gate position from the district office. The district can also remotely view hourly updated displays by clicking on the "Live View" link above.
